Online Divorce: In the UK

Divorce in the UK has become more straightforward thanks to the ability to apply online. Whether you're looking to end your marriage amicably or simply want a more efficient process, the online divorce system is designed to make things clearer, faster, and less stressful.

  • An online divorce allows you to apply for a divorce through the official government portal, without needing to attend court in most cases. It is available to couples who have been married for at least one year and whose relationship has irretrievably broken down.

Since the introduction of “no-fault divorce” in April 2022, you no longer need to assign blame to your spouse. Instead, you simply state that the marriage has broken down.

  • You can apply for an online divorce if:

    • Your marriage is legally recognised in the UK

    • You have been married for at least 12 months

    • Your relationship has permanently broken down

    • Your marriage certificate is available (or you can obtain a copy)

    You can apply either:

    • On your own (a sole application), or

    • Together with your spouse (a joint application)

    • Faster and more convenient than traditional methods

    • No need to attend court in most cases

    • Clear step-by-step process

    • Suitable for amicable separations

  • It’s important to understand that divorce itself does not resolve financial matters or arrangements for children. These must be handled separately.

    You may wish to:

    • Create a financial consent order (legally binding agreement)

    • Agree on child custody and support arrangements

This may require seeking family legal assistance or family mediation.
